Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder of FTX cryptocurrency exchange, has filed a motion for a new trial on fraud charges. The motion was submitted on February 5 and officially filed in a Manhattan federal court. Bankman-Fried, currently serving a 25-year sentence, is representing himself and claims new witnesses can counter the prosecution's allegations of defrauding FTX customers.
The application for a retrial is separate from the formal appeal process of his 2023 conviction. It was submitted to the court clerk by his mother, Barbara Fried, a retired Stanford Law School professor. Analysts suggest the likelihood of the retrial being granted is low.
