French authorities have arrested three men in their twenties for allegedly kidnapping and torturing a 74-year-old man in an attempt to extort $3.5 million in cryptocurrency from his son. The incident occurred on January 25 in Voiron, Isère, when the suspects abducted the victim, mistakenly believing his son was a wealthy crypto trader. The son, however, was a web developer with no significant crypto holdings.
The victim endured nearly 16 hours of torture before the kidnappers realized their error and released him. The suspects had sent footage of the torture to the victim's son, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency. The victim was eventually released unharmed, though he suffered severe physical and emotional trauma. This case highlights a growing trend of crypto-related kidnappings in France, with 19 similar incidents reported recently.
