The French National Gaming Authority (ANJ) has announced a new regulatory measure to block access to the prediction market platform Polymarket within France, effective July 17. This move intensifies the regulatory scrutiny on Polymarket, which allows users to bet on future event outcomes and displays real-time odds changes. The ANJ had previously banned financial transactions with Polymarket for French accounts in November 2024, but continued user engagement and website accessibility prompted stricter action.
The ANJ expressed concerns that the display of real-time odds could promote unauthorized gambling services, which is a criminal offense under French law. Violations could lead to fines of up to €100,000. Despite earlier restrictions, visits to Polymarket from French IP addresses have increased, with 578,751 visits recorded in June, indicating persistent user interest.
