The FBI has reported that U.S. citizens have lost over $333 million to Bitcoin ATM-related scams in 2025, marking a significant increase from previous years. Bitcoin ATMs, which allow users to quickly convert cash into digital currency, have become a favored tool for scammers due to the difficulty in reversing transactions once completed. In a related development, prosecutors in Washington, D.C. have filed charges against major Bitcoin ATM operator Athena Bitcoin, accusing the company of imposing hidden fees and conducting numerous fraudulent transactions, allegations which the company denies. In response to the rising number of cases, several U.S. states are moving to tighten regulations on Bitcoin ATMs, with some areas even considering restrictions or outright bans on these devices.
