A fraudulent social media account impersonating Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong has been identified luring users into investment groups under the guise of economic study sessions. Between September 22 and 23, the fake profile posted personal resume details and directed users who added the account or sent private messages into group chats, avoiding open investment recommendations to evade detection. The Bank of Korea requested the platform remove the impersonation account, which was banned within hours, but associated investment signal groups with large memberships remain active on Telegram. This incident is part of a broader surge in South Korean financial fraud, with scammers also impersonating SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, and Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong using AI-generated deepfake videos that mimic voices and facial expressions.
