Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance Ethereum's base layer by 2029, focusing on faster slot times, near-instant finality, and quantum resistance. The plan, detailed in a post on X, introduces a "strawmap" roadmap developed by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake. This roadmap outlines Ethereum's Layer 1 upgrades, aiming to reduce slot times incrementally from 12 seconds to potentially 2 seconds, while maintaining security through peer-to-peer networking improvements.
The strawmap also proposes a shift to a one-round finality Byzantine fault-tolerant algorithm, potentially reducing finality from 16 minutes to 6-16 seconds. Additionally, the plan includes a cryptographic overhaul to incorporate post-quantum, hash-based signatures and STARK-friendly hash functions. This ambitious vision aims to transform Ethereum's slot structure and consensus, ensuring the network's resilience against future technological advancements.
