Ethereum client teams are testing the Fast Confirmation Rule (FCR) to significantly reduce cross-chain bridge confirmation times to approximately 13 seconds. Proposed by Ethereum researcher Julian Ma, FCR evaluates validator attestations instead of traditional block confirmations, potentially cutting wait times by up to 98%. This mechanism operates under the assumptions of fast network message propagation and no single entity controlling more than 25% of staked ETH. Unlike the current 13-minute wait using canonical bridges, FCR can be implemented without a hard fork, allowing independent node activation. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin supports FCR, noting it can offer "hard guarantees" for transactions within a single slot under certain conditions. Despite this, some community members express skepticism about the trust assumptions, especially under network stress. Development on client and API integrations is ongoing, aiming to enhance the efficiency of L1 to L2 network and exchange deposits.
