Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) is considered the optimal platform for Ethereum Name Service (ENS) names and records, which are integral to the Ethereum ecosystem. These records, while limited in size, hold significant value due to their accessibility and potential financial worth. The expanded scaling roadmap of Ethereum further solidifies L1 as the preferred environment for such applications. The architecture for decentralized identity and social applications, where ENS is positioned, is expected to involve per-user account and profile data on L1. Meanwhile, specialized Layer 2 (L2) solutions, simpler than full Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVMs), are anticipated to manage user actions, such as those on social platforms.
