At the ETHShanghai 2025 main forum, Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang highlighted three critical areas for Ethereum's mass adoption: self-sovereignty, global settlement capabilities, and daily utility. Wang identified major challenges including scalability and cost barriers, user experience gaps, and trust deficits. To address scalability, Ethereum is implementing L1 and L2 solutions such as Dencun (EIP-4844), Pectra (Q1 2025), and Fusaka (Q4 2025). In terms of user experience, advancements are being made through account abstraction proposals like ERC-4337 and EIP-7701. Wang stressed that Ethereum aims to become as seamless and reliable as the internet.
