The Ethereum Foundation is spearheading the development of ERC-8004, a new standard aimed at enhancing collaboration between AI agents within the Web3 ecosystem. Proposed in August 2025, ERC-8004 is based on Google's A2A protocol and is expected to be finalized at Devconnect in November 2025. The standard introduces on-chain registries for identity, reputation, and validation, facilitating agent discovery and task verification while minimizing on-chain storage. ERC-8004 supports off-chain processing for complex logic and is compatible with cross-chain ecosystems, enabling applications like agent marketplaces and decentralized compute markets. The initiative is backed by MetaMask, ConsenSys, and Google, with platforms such as UXLINK exploring its implementation. Despite challenges like gas costs and privacy concerns, ERC-8004 is poised to position Ethereum as a leading platform for AI agent economies.
