The Ethereum Foundation has implemented the BPO-1 upgrade, effective December 10, 2025, to significantly boost the network's Layer 2 capacity. This upgrade increases the number of data blobs per block to 15, enhancing scalability and cost-effectiveness for Layer 2 solutions such as Optimism and Arbitrum, without necessitating a hard fork. The BPO-1 upgrade is anticipated to reduce transaction costs, increase throughput, and improve the user experience for decentralized applications on Layer 2 networks. Additionally, the Ethereum Foundation has announced a subsequent upgrade, BPO-2, planned for January 2026, to further expand network capacity.
