An 80-year-old New York resident, George Chryssanthou, has filed an arbitration claim against Charles Schwab after losing nearly $285,000 to a scam. The incident began on January 17, 2025, when scammers impersonating Microsoft Technical Support accessed Chryssanthou's computer, claiming his accounts were compromised. Over several days, they tricked him into authorizing wire transfers totaling $284,650 to a New Jersey account labeled "Coinbase Inc.," which was then converted into cryptocurrency.
Chryssanthou discovered the fraud on January 29, 2025, and despite FBI involvement, recovery of the funds seems unlikely. In September 2025, Chryssanthou, represented by attorney Adam Gana, filed a claim with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), alleging Charles Schwab failed to supervise and block the suspicious transactions.
