The European Banking Authority (EBA) has announced the termination of the temporary transitional exemption for Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASPs) under the Payment Services Directive (PSD2) as of March 2. CASPs involved in electronic money token (EMT) payments or transfers must now obtain a PSD2 payment institution or electronic money institution license to continue operations. Approved institutions can operate normally, while those with pending applications may continue under restrictions, such as not acquiring new customers or conducting marketing. Non-compliant CASPs must cease payment services immediately. Over 100 CASPs have applied for or inquired about PSD2 licenses.
