The Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit, has ordered Polymarket to halt its operations in the Netherlands, citing a violation of the country's gambling laws. The regulator found that Polymarket was offering gambling services to Dutch users without the necessary local license. Users in the Netherlands were able to register, deposit, and place bets on the platform, which the authority classified as a "game of chance" requiring a license.
Polymarket, which describes itself as a prediction market rather than a traditional gambling service, faces potential fines of €420,000 per week, up to a maximum of €840,000, if it fails to comply with the order. The regulator dismissed Polymarket's argument, maintaining that the platform's activities fall under the scope of regulated gambling.
