The Nederlandse Loterij, the Netherlands' state-owned lottery operator, has filed a lawsuit against Qbet, the country's largest unlicensed online gambling platform, seeking a €24.8 million fine. The legal action targets the offshore shell companies and directors behind Qbet, marking a significant move against black market gambling in Europe. The lawsuit was filed at the District Court of The Hague, with the first hearing held on April 9.
The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) had previously imposed a record fine on Novatech Solutions, the operator of Qbet and its sister site 55Bet, for allowing Dutch users to gamble without restrictions or age verification. The acceptance of cryptocurrency and anonymous payments was noted as an aggravating factor. Despite the fine, Novatech dissolved its registration in Curaçao but continued operations, prompting further legal action by Nederlandse Loterij.
This case follows a similar lawsuit by Nederlandse Loterij against Lalabet, another unlicensed operator, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating illegal gambling in the Netherlands. The KSA estimates that 53% of Dutch online gambling spend goes to unlicensed platforms, underscoring the urgency of regulatory enforcement.
