DuckDuckGo has introduced a new browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that promotes "AI-free search," allowing users to set noai.duckduckgo.com as their default search engine. This move comes in response to Google's recent AI integration into its search products. Since Google's announcement, traffic to DuckDuckGo's non-AI search page has tripled, with visits remaining 84% above normal levels on average.
The extension, launched on June 1, aims to convert temporary visits into long-term defaults by automatically blocking AI-generated content. DuckDuckGo also offers a Privacy Essentials extension for users who prefer to toggle AI features individually. The company's CEO, Gabriel Weinberg, criticized Google's lack of a clear opt-out option for AI features. Meanwhile, DuckDuckGo's app installs in the U.S. have increased significantly, with iOS daily installs peaking at 69.9%.
