Dragonfly Managing Partner Haseeb Qureshi has publicly challenged a16z partner Chris Dixon's views on non-financial crypto use cases. Haseeb argues that these use cases have not failed due to regulatory issues or industry scandals, but rather because they lack genuine market demand. He points out that if regulation and fraud were the main obstacles, financial crypto applications, which face stricter regulation and more fraud, would also fail. However, the opposite is true, as successful crypto applications like Bitcoin, stablecoins, programmable money, DeFi, prediction markets, NFTs, and RWAs are predominantly financial. Haseeb emphasizes that significant capital and talent have already explored Web3 consumer scenarios, yet demand has not materialized. He suggests that the crypto industry does not need to rely on narratives of future disruption in gaming and media, as the innovation potential within the financial sector alone is sufficient to support long-term growth.
