Douyin’s average monthly usage time per user surpassed WeChat for the first time in July, making it China’s top app by user time, according to a Nomura report cited by Futu NiuNiu.
Among the top 50 internet apps, ByteDance products including Douyin, Doubao, Hongguo, Fanqie and Toutiao accounted for about 40.9% of Chinese internet users’ total usage time, up from 33.6% in July last year and ahead of Tencent’s roughly 29.1% share. WeChat still led in daily active users with about 931 million versus Douyin’s 714 million, while Douyin’s DAU grew about 19% year over year compared with WeChat’s 3%. Douyin users spent about 112–120 minutes per day on the app, above WeChat’s 82–85 minutes.
