AI cybersecurity startup Cathedral, founded by former members of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), breached Anthropic's internal systems in under 12 hours, accessing meeting records, compensation data, hiring information, Slack messages, sales systems, and IT infrastructure. Anthropic confirmed the intrusion involved business contact information for customers and partners along with some basic user account records, but stated that Claude user conversations, source code, and model weights were not compromised.
The breach was conducted under Anthropic's bug bounty program via a vulnerability in third-party commercial software. However, Anthropic accused Cathedral of failing to fully disclose its actions, violating the program's rules. Cathedral is valued at $1.4 billion and has raised $160 million from investors including a16z and Sequoia Capital.
