Ruby on Rails creator and 37signals CTO David Heinemeier Hansson said AI coding capabilities have advanced at a "decades-level" pace over the past nine months, shifting his view from skepticism about code completion tools to full adoption of AI agents. He said the Omarchy Linux project is now written entirely by agents, while he focuses on direction, product design, and final review.
Hansson said AI agents can now perform roughly 80% to 100% of practical coding work, pushing programmers’ core value toward problem discovery, architecture, quality judgment, product vision, and aesthetics. He added that higher code output alone will not solve innovation challenges at large companies, where communication, ideas, vision, and product judgment often remain the main bottlenecks.
He urged developers not to tie their value solely to mechanical coding, but to learn how to orchestrate multiple agents and cross-review code with different models. He also said AI has significantly improved in understanding Linux and open-source codebases and in diagnosing issues, which could lower barriers to Linux adoption and help expand desktop Linux usage.
