Cuba's Bitcoin community has launched a censorship-resistant financial infrastructure using Cashu and the Lightning Network to support offline transactions amid economic challenges and power outages. Established in 2022, the community created 'Community Cashu,' a sovereign bank enabling peer-to-peer transactions without third-party interference. This system includes a Lightning Network node optimized for mobile use and a Cashu 'mint' protocol for offline, privacy-preserving transactions.
The initiative also introduces user-friendly tools like 'La Chispa' to facilitate payments, and its model is being considered for expansion to other regions in Latin America and Africa. The Latin American Bitcoin Federation has acknowledged the project, with Cuba Bitcoin joining as one of 39 communities in 2024.
