Crypto platforms have lost more than $3.63 billion since early 2025, according to CoinGecko’s latest 2026 State of Crypto Security Report. The report said the losses were driven mainly by supply chain attacks, smart contract exploits, and private key theft.
CoinGecko said about 60% of attacked crypto platforms had completed independent security audits, but most incidents fell outside the scope of routine reviews. It also said effective underwriting coverage on crypto insurance platforms dropped 20.2% to $130.2 million from $163.2 million, even as exploit incidents increased. Several centralized exchanges have launched protection funds aimed at covering users in the event of exploits.
