A sophisticated impersonation scam involving a fake CoinDCX website has led to the arrest of the company's co-founders, Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal, before a court intervention cleared them of wrongdoing. The scam, which defrauded a victim of 7.16 million rupees ($77,000), utilized the counterfeit domain coindcx.pro to mimic the legitimate CoinDCX platform, coindcx.com. This case highlights the effectiveness of low-tech scams that exploit brand credibility through fake websites, social media, and messaging channels. The incident began with a complaint from a victim in Mumbra, Mumbai, who was lured by promises of high monthly returns. The scam escalated into legal proceedings against CoinDCX's leadership until a Thane magistrate court determined the fraud was perpetrated by external actors impersonating the company. CoinDCX has since reported over 1,200 fake websites and launched a 100 crore rupee ($10.76 million) initiative, the Digital Suraksha Network, to combat fraud and enhance user awareness. This case underscores the need for vigilance in verifying online platforms and the challenges law enforcement faces in distinguishing legitimate companies from fraudulent impersonators. Users are advised to verify domains, be wary of high-return promises, and ensure transactions occur only through official channels.
