Coinbase has outlined its “Agentic Finance” (AiFi) vision, positioning AI agents as active participants in economic activity that need native financial capabilities including payments, fund transfers, balance holding and receiving funds. The company said traditional financial systems are built mainly for human users, while AI agents require always-on, programmable and global infrastructure that crypto and stablecoins can provide. Coinbase said its AiFi ecosystem includes Coinbase Advisor for executing AI investment strategies, Coinbase for Agents to connect AI tools with trading accounts, the x402 open payment protocol for machine-to-machine payments, and Coinbase Business for merchant payments. According to the company, x402 has processed more than 205 million transactions, generated $53 million in transaction volume, and reached about 200,000 sellers. Coinbase said AI agents could eventually carry out tasks such as market research, asset management, and purchasing data and services autonomously, with crypto infrastructure serving as a key link between AI and the broader economic system.
