A 23-year-old Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for stealing nearly $15.94 million through a sophisticated phishing scheme targeting Coinbase users. Ronald Spektor impersonated customer support representatives over roughly one year, convincing approximately 100 victims that their accounts were compromised and tricking them into transferring cryptocurrency to wallets under his control. Spektor pleaded guilty on September 2 to all 31 charges, including first-degree money laundering and first-degree grand larceny. He laundered the stolen funds through multiple exchanges, mixing services, and crypto gambling platforms before openly flaunting the proceeds on Telegram. The court ordered him to forfeit more than $500,000 in cash, cryptocurrency, and personal property, and mandated nearly $16 million in restitution to victims.
