Cloudflare has confirmed that the massive outage on November 18th was due to an internal configuration error, not a network attack. The issue arose from an incorrect configuration file following database permission adjustments, which disrupted the core proxy system. This affected several services, including CDN, security services, Workers KV, Turnstile, and Access. Initially mistaken for a DDoS attack, the problem was resolved by reverting to previous configuration files, with all services restored by 01:06 AM Beijing time on November 19th.
Cloudflare described the outage as the most severe since 2019 and emphasized that such incidents are unacceptable. The company plans to expedite upgrades to enhance system resilience and prevent future occurrences.
