Circle Foundation has awarded grants to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to explore regulated stablecoins for humanitarian aid disbursement. The initiative aims to leverage digital payments to deliver funds to beneficiaries faster, more transparently, and at lower cost than traditional methods.
The UNDP grant will establish a "Digital Asset Innovation Pool" to scale existing digital payment pilots in Syria, Haiti, Guatemala, and The Gambia into regular programming with regulatory and operational support. This mechanism is designed to supplement, not replace, traditional banking channels. Meanwhile, WFP funding will support governance, risk management, and compliance infrastructure for stablecoin integration with local fintech services. Over the next three years, WFP plans to test two to three payment corridors to assess stablecoin efficiency and resilience.
