Chilean authorities have initiated an investigation into the cryptocurrency platform Plusspay, accusing it of aiding the transnational criminal organization "Tren de Aragua" in money laundering activities. The platform is alleged to have converted local fiat currency into stablecoins such as Tether (USDT) and other U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins through various affiliated companies. These funds were then reportedly transferred via Chile's banking system.
The investigation has uncovered suspicious fund flows exceeding $84 million, raising concerns about the platform's role in facilitating illicit financial activities. This development highlights the ongoing challenges regulators face in monitoring cryptocurrency transactions and preventing their misuse by criminal entities.
