Cardano has been added to the official x402 software kit, enabling developers to build applications and AI agents that can autonomously pay for online services using ADA or network-issued tokens. The protocol leverages the HTTP "402 Payment Required" response to facilitate machine-to-machine transactions, allowing agents to purchase data or computing power on demand without human intervention or subscription models.
Originally created by Coinbase in 2025, x402 is now managed by a Linux Foundation-backed organization with members including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and Amazon Web Services. Cardano joins Solana, XRP Ledger, and various Ethereum-compatible networks in supporting the standard. The initial release provides TypeScript support for client and server software, with Python integration planned next.
