A Canadian resident from Nanaimo fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam involving impersonation of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The scam began with a text message offering a remote stock trading job, leading the victim to deposit CAD 5,000 via a crypto ATM. Later, the victim received a fraudulent online message posing as an RCMP announcement, prompting them to report the scam. A supposed lawyer then contacted the victim, claiming to have found two crypto accounts linked to them, offering to recover USD 60,000 in profits.
Gary O'Brien of Nanaimo RCMP clarified that the RCMP does not contact individuals about discovered crypto accounts or partner with private firms for fund recovery. Andy Zhou of BlockSec identified this as a "fake recovery service scam," where scammers use personal data from initial frauds to target victims again. The scam leverages "authority bias" by using law enforcement branding. Canadian police have been training in cryptocurrency investigations since 2022 to combat such frauds.
