Ronald Specter, a 23-year-old from Brooklyn, has been charged with 31 counts, including grand larceny and money laundering, for allegedly stealing over $16 million in cryptocurrency. Specter is accused of impersonating a Coinbase employee to deceive approximately 100 victims into transferring their crypto assets to his wallet under the guise of protecting them from hacking threats. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office revealed that Specter allegedly laundered the stolen funds through cryptocurrency mixers, exchanges, and gambling sites. The charges were announced on December 21.
