Ajay Shinjin, 25, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his role in a SIM-swap scam that stole nearly £200,000 ($265,000) in cryptocurrency. The City of London Police announced the sentencing on October 8 after Shinjin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and transferring criminal proceeds.
The criminal gang transferred victims' phone numbers to SIM cards under their control, intercepting SMS verification codes to access crypto accounts. Shinjin personally received over £44,000 in illicit proceeds, which he spent on trips to Dubai, a luxury apartment, and gold-plated dental work.
