Joseph James O'Connor, a 26-year-old British hacker, has been ordered to repay approximately £4.1 million in Bitcoin after defrauding several celebrities. O'Connor, who was sentenced to five years in a U.S. prison in 2023 for computer hacking, wire fraud, and extortion, was arrested in Spain in 2021 and extradited to the U.S. due to the location of evidence and victims. In July 2020, O'Connor and his accomplices hacked into the social media accounts of high-profile figures, including Obama, Biden, and Bezos, on the platform X. They orchestrated a scam that tricked users into sending Bitcoin with false promises of returns, stealing over $794,000. The UK Crown Prosecution Service has now secured a civil suit order to seize assets, including 42 bitcoins, following the freezing of O'Connor's assets during extradition proceedings.
