A Brazilian federal court has convicted 14 individuals for laundering over $95 million in drug trafficking and kidnapping profits using Bitcoin. The court handed down sentences of over 21 years to two ringleaders, while 12 others received sentences ranging from 10 to 17 years. The convictions stem from a police operation, Fertile Land, which uncovered the use of shell companies, fake tax IDs, and cryptocurrency to obscure the origins of the illicit funds.
