BNB Chain has published a research report evaluating the potential migration of BNB Smart Chain (BSC) to post-quantum cryptographic systems. The report examines the feasibility and performance implications of adopting quantum-resistant technologies, such as ML-DSA-44 transaction signatures and pqSTARK aggregation for validator consensus. While quantum computing does not yet pose a threat to current blockchain cryptography, the report underscores the importance of preparing for future advancements.
Key findings indicate that post-quantum readiness is technically feasible but involves significant scalability trade-offs. Testing showed transaction sizes increased from 110 bytes to approximately 2.5 KB, and block sizes grew from around 110 KB to 2 MB, reducing native transfer TPS from 4,973 to 2,997. Despite these challenges, pqSTARK aggregation proved efficient, compressing validator signatures at a 43:1 ratio. The report highlights the need for further research on post-quantum replacements for P2P handshakes and KZG commitments, emphasizing that the study is exploratory rather than a response to immediate threats.
