Block has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin Lightning payment capabilities to advance open standards for AI agent transactions. The integration aims to provide infrastructure enabling payments between individuals, businesses, and AI agents using Lightning Network technology. Established in April under the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation focuses on developing open payment standards for autonomous AI systems. The initiative is backed by major technology firms including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, alongside crypto industry participants such as Coinbase and the Solana Foundation.
