Block Inc. has enabled Bitcoin payments for over one million U.S. merchants through its Square platform, leveraging the Lightning Network for near-instant settlements. This automatic enrollment, which began on March 30, allows merchants to receive USD settlements while customers pay in Bitcoin, minimizing currency risk. Merchants can opt out if desired.
At the Bitcoin 2024 conference, Block emphasized its strategy to promote Bitcoin as a daily payment tool. The company introduced a tap-to-pay feature using NFC and the Lightning Network, offering zero fees until year-end. Additionally, Block's Q1 2026 Proof of Reserves report revealed holdings of 28,355.05 BTC, valued at approximately $2.2 billion.
