A family of Bitcoin investors in British Columbia, Canada, was violently targeted in a home invasion in April 2024. Four masked men, posing as postal workers, entered the home, bound the parents, and subjected them to waterboarding, demanding 200 Bitcoins. The attackers ultimately transferred approximately $1.6 million. One suspect, Chan, hired from Hong Kong for the attack, was sentenced to seven years in prison after receiving about 50,000 Canadian dollars for his involvement. The other three accomplices and a man who ordered the attack by phone remain at large. Police have warned that cryptocurrency investors may continue to be prime targets for organized crime.
