Bitcoin Core 32.0 entered its final testing phase on September 14, with the stable release scheduled for October 10. The update does not change Bitcoin’s consensus rules and introduces a second fee estimator that can reference currently unconfirmed transactions, allowing fee recommendations to decrease more quickly as network congestion eases. Nodes can also use multithreading to retrieve transaction data from databases during block checks, with eight threads enabled by default to reduce disk wait times.
The release fixes a vulnerability present on non-Windows systems since Bitcoin Core 24.0 that could allow an authenticated user with wallet-creation privileges to execute commands through a specially crafted wallet name under specific conditions when walletnotify is enabled. Four commands used to create partially signed transactions will default to PSBT version 2, requiring compatible services. An audit also identified a memory-exhaustion risk in the new web server; 16 unauthenticated REST connections could increase node memory from 46 MB to about 3 GB within one minute. The issue was fixed before the 32.0 release.
