The Bhutanese government has announced plans to use 10,000 Bitcoin from its reserves to fund the development of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) in the south. Launched in 2024, this project aims to establish a new economic zone by fostering industries such as finance, tourism, green energy, technology, healthcare, and agriculture. The initiative seeks to attract investment and mitigate youth emigration.
Currently, Bhutan holds approximately 11,286 BTC, valued at around $986 million, making it the fifth-largest known national Bitcoin holder globally. The majority of these holdings have been acquired through mining activities.
