A Beijing man, Su Jingliang, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for his involvement in a transnational cryptocurrency "pig butchering" scam that embezzled $36.9 million. Su was also ordered to pay $26.87 million in restitution. The scam involved building trust with victims via social media and dating apps, leading them to invest in fake cryptocurrency platforms.
The operation laundered funds from 174 U.S. victims through 74 shell company accounts, converting them into Tether (USDT). Su, acting as an "accountant," coordinated with Deltec Bank via Telegram to convert and transfer these funds to a virtual wallet, which were then funneled to fraud operations in Southeast Asia.
