The Basque Country Police (Ertzaintza) in Spain have reported a significant increase in cryptocurrency-related crimes, with 541 cases investigated in 2025. Many of these cases remain under investigation as authorities intensify efforts to combat the rising threat. To address this, the police have established a 26-member cybercrime unit and equipped themselves with advanced tools to monitor transactions across multiple blockchain networks. The ongoing investigations include 13 suspected cryptocurrency fraud cases and 2 suspected money laundering cases, alongside incidents of tax evasion and illegal purchases. Authorities have warned the public about fraudsters impersonating friends and family on social media platforms like Instagram, offering fraudulent investment advice and tricking victims into installing malicious applications that can remotely control devices, leading to theft of cryptocurrency wallets and bank accounts.
