Banca Sella has become the first Italian bank to receive authorization under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) to offer crypto-asset services. This milestone, achieved through the Bank of Italy, allows Banca Sella to provide custody, transfer, and receipt solutions for digital assets starting in 2026, targeting specific customer segments. The authorization marks a significant step for Italy's banking sector, transitioning from crypto pilots to regulated services within a harmonized EU framework. Banca Sella's crypto initiatives include its digital banking brand Hype's partnership with Conio for Bitcoin wallet services and participation in the Bank of Italy's 2022 DLT pilot. The bank is also a founding member of Qivalis, a consortium exploring euro-denominated stablecoins, reflecting broader industry moves towards regulated digital asset infrastructure.
