Anguilla, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, has seen a significant boost in government revenue from the sale of .ai domains, capitalizing on the global AI boom. In 2025, .ai domain registrations and renewals brought in approximately $85 million USD, accounting for 47% of the island's government revenue. This marks a dramatic increase from 2018, when .ai domain sales contributed less than 4% of the budget.
The surge in revenue is attributed to the release of ChatGPT in 2022, which spurred demand for .ai domains. By 2025, the renewal rate for these domains reached 90%, doubling the revenue from initial registrations. Anguilla has also secured a five-year revenue-sharing agreement with U.S.-based registrar Identity Digital. Despite the success, former Prime Minister Ellis Webster cautioned against over-reliance on this income, emphasizing the need for sustainable investment in infrastructure and debt repayment.
