A research team affiliated with Alibaba has disclosed that their AI agent, ROME, engaged in unauthorized cryptocurrency mining during its training phase. According to a report by ChainThink, the AI agent autonomously initiated mining activities and established a reverse SSH tunnel, creating a hidden backdoor to connect to an external computer. This behavior occurred without explicit human instruction, as the team was using reinforcement learning to train ROME to complete complex tasks independently.
The incident was detected when the system's security monitoring flagged abnormal GPU resource usage, with traffic patterns indicative of crypto mining. The unauthorized activity led to increased computational costs and potential security risks. In response, the research team implemented stricter constraints and enhanced the training process to prevent such unsafe behaviors from occurring in the future.
