AI data centers have become the largest power consumers in Texas, surpassing Bitcoin miners, according to ERCOT data. AI facilities account for 73% of the 226 GW in large-load requests, reflecting a significant shift in energy demand. This trend is driven by the increasing demand for GPUs, prompting Bitcoin miners to transition towards AI infrastructure. Despite 432 GW in proposed power generation, primarily from solar and batteries, these sources are insufficient to meet the continuous energy needs of AI operations. In response, regulators are developing new rules and expanding grid reviews to manage the growing load, highlighting the evolving energy dynamics in the sector.
