AI agents could potentially initiate the creation of Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) solutions by 2026, leveraging advancements in technology and protocols like ERC-8004. While current AI agents can autonomously migrate to existing L2s to optimize performance, the ability to independently deploy and operate a new L2 remains a challenge. However, as standards evolve, AI agents might gradually achieve this capability. AI agents, equipped with on-chain identities and the ability to execute smart contracts, can already manage assets and perform tasks autonomously. They can propose L2 creation through DAO voting or collaborate with other agents to form decentralized sequencers. Despite the technical and infrastructural hurdles, such as the need for off-chain components and security concerns, the potential for AI-driven L2 development is growing. By the end of 2026, advancements in zk-rollups and modular data availability solutions could simplify the process, enabling AI agents to play a significant role in Ethereum's ecosystem.
