AI agents have executed 138 million cryptocurrency payments, driven primarily by U.S. spending on AI models and facilitated by stablecoins capable of handling sub-cent transactions. Chainalysis data indicates that over 87% of payments via the x402 protocol ranged between $0.0001 and $0.10, a value range economically unviable for traditional credit card networks but essential for automated machine-to-machine commerce.
The x402 protocol, incubated by Coinbase, processed approximately 75 million payments totaling $24 million in July alone. Industry leaders, including Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu and Cloudflare CSO Stephanie Cohen, project that AI agents could become crypto’s next billion users as stablecoins enable frictionless purchases of data and computing power without human intervention. Despite this volume growth, researchers note that transaction counts do not yet confirm genuine commercial demand amid concerns about artificial network activity.
