Seoul police have concluded their investigation into the disappearance of 22 BTC, valued at approximately $1.6 million, from an evidence storage room without conducting an internal audit or holding officers accountable. The Bitcoin, seized during a financial hacking investigation in November 2021, was stored on a cold wallet USB device. An inspection in 2022 revealed the wallet was empty, but no disciplinary actions have been taken against the responsible officer. Authorities admitted the assets should have been transferred to a police-controlled cold wallet, but cited a lack of guidelines at the time. Despite internal discussions recommending secure custody methods as early as July 2021, these were not implemented by the Gangnam Police Station. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is now reviewing the custody status of virtual assets seized after March 2022.
