CopyFi on Phemex: From Sign-Up to Your First Copy-Trading Session

CopyFi is a third-party copy-trading and strategy-management service that can connect to a Phemex account through an API key. According to CopyFi, its platform lets users follow selected futures traders while applying their own trade-size, leverage, asset, and risk controls before an order is submitted to the user’s connected exchange account.

This article summarizes the setup flow described in CopyFi’s product guide and platform tour. It is intended as an informational walkthrough, not an endorsement of any third-party service or a recommendation to trade. Crypto derivatives involve substantial risk, and past performance does not predict future results.

How the connection works

The setup involves three parts:

  1. A trader opens or adjusts a futures position.
  2. CopyFi evaluates that activity against the strategy settings selected by the user.
  3. If the trade meets those rules, CopyFi submits an order to the user’s connected Phemex account through an API key.

CopyFi states that users can configure restrictions such as a margin cap, maximum leverage, blocked assets, and session-level stop conditions. A trade that does not meet those rules may be skipped.

For a live connection, CopyFi requires an API key with trading access. The key should not include withdrawal permission. An API key without withdrawal authorization can be used for permitted account and trading actions but cannot be used to submit withdrawals through the API.

Before you start

Before creating a live CopyFi session, you will generally need:

  • A Phemex account.
  • A CopyFi account.
  • USDT available in your Phemex Futures account for live futures trading.
  • A Phemex API key configured for read and trading access, without withdrawal permission.

If you only want to test the workflow first, CopyFi also offers a paper-trading option. According to CopyFi, a paper session uses simulated funds and does not require an API connection.

Step 1: Create a CopyFi account

Go to copyfi.ai and select Start Smart Copying. Create an account with your email address and password, then enter the verification code sent to your inbox.

CopyFi says that a product tour may appear when you first sign in. The tour introduces the core areas of the platform, including the dashboard, trader list, strategy builder, and session pages.

Once sessions are active, the dashboard separates live and paper results. It may also display selected market prices, market data, and news.

Step 2: Create a Phemex API key

An API key allows a connected third-party application to interact with your Phemex account according to the permissions you select. Before creating one, review the permissions carefully and only grant what is necessary for the intended use.

To create an API key on Phemex:

  1. Log in to your Phemex account.
  2. Open the account menu from the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select API Management.
  4. Select Create new API key.
  5. Choose the available API entry type. CopyFi’s guide uses the high-rate-limit option marked as recommended.
  6. Enter a recognizable API key name, such as “CopyFi.”
  7. Add the CopyFi trading IP address provided in its Manage broker keys section.
  8. Select Read&Trade Permission.
  9. Do not select withdrawal permission unless you independently require it for another purpose.
  10. Confirm the request and enter the email verification code sent by Phemex.
  11. Copy and securely store the API key ID and API Secret before closing the confirmation window.

Phemex may display an activation period for newly created API keys. If a new key does not work immediately, wait for the stated activation period before creating another key.

Why the IP address matters

CopyFi recommends adding its trading IP address when creating the API key. An IP restriction limits API access to the listed address, helping prevent the key from being used from unapproved locations.

If CopyFi reports an “IP mismatch” error, verify that the IP address entered in Phemex API Management exactly matches the current address shown in CopyFi’s broker-key settings.

Choose permissions carefully

For this use case, CopyFi’s guide specifies Read&Trade Permission.

  • Read-Only access cannot submit orders.
  • Read&Trade Permission can read relevant account information and submit permitted trading actions.
  • Read&Trade &Withdraw Permission adds withdrawal capability and is not required for the workflow described in CopyFi’s guide.

Keep your API Secret private. Do not share it in chat messages, screenshots, public documents, or support requests. If you believe the secret has been exposed, delete the affected API key in Phemex API Management and create a new one.

Step 3: Add the API key to CopyFi

After creating the key, return to CopyFi and open:

Copy Trade → Manage broker keys

Under Add New Broker Connection, enter the following details:

CopyFi field Value from Phemex
API Name Any label you can recognize
Broker Phemex
PassKey Your Phemex API key ID
SecretKey Your Phemex API Secret

Then select Save Connection.

The terminology differs between the two interfaces: Phemex’s API key ID is entered as the PassKey in CopyFi, while the Phemex API Secret is entered as the SecretKey.

CopyFi describes a saved Phemex connection as a live key, meaning a session that uses it can place orders in the connected Phemex account. Review the selected account and strategy settings before starting a live session.

Step 4: Fund your Phemex Futures account

Live copied futures orders draw from your Phemex Futures balance. If USDT is only held in a Spot account, it may not be available for a futures position until it is transferred to the relevant Futures account.

You can fund your account by depositing USDT or by acquiring USDT through the options available in your region and account. Before starting a live session, confirm that the Futures account—not only the Spot account—has the intended available balance.

If CopyFi shows a $0 live balance, check the following:

  • The correct Phemex API key is connected.
  • The key has the required read and trading permissions.
  • The account holds available funds in the Futures account.
  • The API key has completed any stated activation period.
  • The key’s IP restriction matches CopyFi’s current trading IP, if an IP restriction was added.

Paper sessions do not require live trading funds.

Step 5: Build a strategy

CopyFi’s Strategy Builder is the layer between a trader’s activity and orders sent to your account. It is where you define the conditions under which trades may be copied.

CopyFi’s guide groups the settings into four areas.

Basics

Margin cap
This limits the portion of your wallet that may be committed as margin. For example, with a $100 account and an 80% cap, a strategy would limit total committed margin to $80 under the rules described by CopyFi.

Maximum simultaneous trades
This sets how many copied positions may remain open at the same time.

Cross or isolated margin
Isolated margin assigns a defined amount of margin to an individual position. Cross margin can use available account balance to support positions. Each mode has different liquidation and risk implications.

Long-only or short-only
This allows the strategy to copy only one directional type of trade.

Reverse
According to CopyFi, this setting takes the opposite side of a trader’s orders. It is presented as an optional setting, not as a trading recommendation.

Risk management

Maximum leverage
This sets a leverage ceiling for copied positions. Leverage can magnify both gains and losses. For example, at 10x leverage, a 1% move in the position can represent an approximately 10% change relative to the margin used, before fees and other factors.

Blocked coins
This excludes selected assets from a strategy.

Kill switches
CopyFi describes three session-level stop conditions:

  • A P&L limit in dollars.
  • A drawdown limit in percentage terms.
  • A maximum number of consecutive losses.

When a selected condition is reached, CopyFi states that it can stop the session and close open positions according to the session rules. Review these settings carefully, including how P&L, drawdown, fees, and partially filled orders are treated.

Order execution

Position size
CopyFi offers several sizing approaches, including mirroring the trader’s wallet percentage, using fixed margin, or not adjusting the original size.

A mirrored-percent approach, for example, may translate a trader’s 10% wallet allocation into a 10% allocation of your own configured wallet amount. A trade may be filtered out or rejected if available balance, leverage limits, or exchange requirements do not support it.

Adds and trims
You can define how the strategy responds when the followed trader adds to, reduces, or partially closes a position.

Limit or market orders
Limit orders are placed at a specified price and may not fill if the market moves away. Market orders are designed to execute at the best available price but may incur higher fees and experience slippage in volatile conditions.

Exit strategy

Closing orders
You can select an order type for closing positions, subject to available settings.

Stop loss and take profit
These are user-defined exit levels intended to close a position at a selected loss or profit threshold. Execution is not guaranteed at an exact price in rapidly moving markets.

Trailing stop
A trailing stop is designed to move as the market moves in a favorable direction, based on the strategy configuration.

After reviewing the parameters, name the strategy and create it. CopyFi also offers strategy templates, including Conservative, Balanced, and Aggressive options. Templates are starting points only; they do not eliminate the need to assess settings against your own risk tolerance.

Step 6: Start a session

CopyFi’s Copy Trade flow asks you to select:

  1. Who to follow.
  2. How to copy their activity, using a strategy.
  3. Where orders or signals should go.

CopyFi lists three destination types:

Destination What it does
Phemex (Live) Sends live orders to the connected Phemex account
Paper trading Uses simulated funds and does not require an API key
Telegram Sends trade signals without placing orders

A paper session can be useful for reviewing how a strategy behaves with live market prices before enabling a live API connection. However, simulated execution may differ from live execution because of liquidity, slippage, order-book conditions, latency, account limits, and other market factors.

The Telegram option is described by CopyFi as a notification-only mode. It does not place trades. Instead, it can send information about a trader’s order and the strategy-adjusted version of that order based on an entered wallet amount.

Once running, sessions appear under My Sessions, where CopyFi says users can review orders, open positions, and closed trades.

  • Pause stops new copying while leaving existing positions open.
  • Stop ends the session. Confirm the exact handling of open positions before using it.

For live-session alerts, CopyFi’s guide directs users to send the displayed code to @CopyFiSignalsBot on Telegram.

What the API key can and cannot do

The specific capabilities of an API key depend on the permissions selected in Phemex API Management.

For the configuration described in this guide, the connected application can use the key for permitted account-reading and trading actions. It should not have withdrawal permission.

An IP-restricted key can only be used from the approved IP addresses. You can revoke a third-party application’s access at any time by deleting its API key through Phemex API Management.

An API permission configuration can reduce certain access risks, but it does not remove trading risk. A key with trading permission can submit trades within the permissions and controls you authorize. Users remain responsible for their third-party connections, risk parameters, account security, and trading decisions.

Optional: Connect your own AI tools

CopyFi states that its AI connections feature can provide files and a token for compatible AI or MCP clients, allowing those tools to read session and account data.

If you enable such a connection, consider the privacy and security implications before sharing account data, API credentials, trading records, or personal information with any AI provider or third-party tool. CopyFi states that its strategy rules remain the hard boundary for trading execution and that its AI tools do not provide financial advice.

Key takeaways

CopyFi’s Phemex integration uses an API key to connect a CopyFi strategy to a user’s Phemex Futures account. The key setup is the most security-sensitive part of the process:

  • Use only the minimum permissions required.
  • Do not enable withdrawal permission for this workflow.
  • Consider using the IP restriction supplied by CopyFi.
  • Store your API Secret securely.
  • Verify that USDT is available in the Futures account before starting a live session.
  • Review strategy rules, leverage, trade-size limits, and kill switches before enabling live orders.
  • Start with paper trading if you want to observe the workflow without using live funds.
